Dismissed Police Officer Sentenced To Death By Hanging For Killing Colleague.

An Umuahia High Court has sentenced a former police officer, Corporal Umaru Mohammed to death by hanging over the killing of another police man.

Corporal Umaru Mohammed, who was attached to the Abia State Government House had on July 19, 2011, shot and killed Corporal Clement Amaechi, also attached to the Government House, at his official residence, 19B, Okpara Avenue, GRA, Umuahia.

In his judgment, presiding judge, Justice Agwu Umah Kalu said that the prosecution had proved beyond doubt that the gunshots fired by Umaru Mohammed at close range killed the deceased.

He stated that the offence was punishable under section 319, Cap 1 of the criminal code as applicable to Abia State.

He therefore said that the accused deserved no sympathy and should be hanged on the neck until he dies, saying that it would serve as a deterrent to those who may want to commit similar crimes.

The police had earlier subjected Umaru Mohammed to orderly room trial where he was found him guilty and was dismissed. The High court then tried him according to law, after the matter was remitted from the Magistrate Court.

We have so many cases of such killings and nothing or little is heard of the outcomes,so am wondering why the Justice system actually took this one serious.
